The History of the Women's Institute
The Women’s Institute was formed in 1915 in an attempt to revitalise rural communities and to encourage women to become more involved in producing food in World War 1. Its aims have broadened, and over the decades the WI has championed many causes, such as lobbying for equal pay, being involved in campaigns such as Keep Britain Tidy, Jubilee celebrations, Freedom from Hunger, environmental issues such as pollution and recycling, homelessness, Fair Trade, and mental health. It is the largest voluntary women’s organisation in the UK. The WI website www.thewi.org.uk provides a fascinating history of its evolution. And of course we still knit and make jam!!
Reformed in 2006, Bakewell WI meets on the third Tuesday of every month at 7.30 in the Friends Meeting House, Bakewell. We also hold regular coffee mornings and get involved with Bakewell Market by hosting a stall for charity, and support the annual Carnival. We are also putting together for 2024 an expanded activities list, including walks, trips to a distillery and the local gliding club, and would like to add in some crafting activities. Our committee recognises that everyone should have a say in what we do and further suggestions are always welcomed. We also welcome newcomers to try a taster session and wish to attract people of all ages.

Meetings and where to find us
All our regular meetings are held at the Friends Meeting House, Chapel Lane, Bakewell, DE45 1EL. There is limited parking but plenty of spaces on the main Bakewell car park in the market place. Anyone with difficulties attending can ask for lifts and we will do our best to help. Non members are welcome to attend all our activities, for which a cost is levied (of course coffee events are free!). Other meetings and events are highlighted below. Further details will be included in our regular monthly newsletter and at our meetings.
